Supported by the Pou Kapua Creations Trust, the team—comprising Indigenous Māori, Pacific, Asian, and European experts—blends ancestral wisdom with modern disciplines like physics, machine learning, and sociology. Their mission is to ignite traditional knowledge holders and contemporary scholars to shape tomorrow's technologies, ensuring that Indigenous communities perform and thrive with AI that respects their heritage. The Challenge For Indigenous organizations, researchers, and iwi (tribes), the digital landscape was fraught with friction. Valuable knowledge was locked away in "Lakes of Data"—thousands of unorganized documents, reports, and oral histories. Finding specific, relevant answers within this data was nearly impossible using standard tools. Furthermore, generic AI models often failed to grasp cultural nuances, leading to hallucinations or the misuse of Taonga (treasured data). Hakamana needed a partner to build a platform that could:
- Ingest and organize massive, fragmented datasets.
- Guarantee sovereignty, ensuring data is used according to Tikanga (cultural values).
- Provide verified accuracy, moving beyond generic chat to rigorous, cited research support.

By implementing Tohatoro (accurate referencing), the platform provides quality references and source documents for every answer. Users can now instantly find "treasures" in their data that were previously lost, supporting rigorous research and development.
Operational Efficiency & Scale The suite of tools—from Marama for reporting to Tupu for growth—automates labor-intensive processes. This allows Indigenous organizations to focus less on administrative data crunching and more on strategic advancement and community well-being.
Sovereignty in Action We proved that high-tech innovation and traditional values can coexist. The platform honors the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) while strictly protecting the sanctity of the data, providing a safe digital space for cultural expression.
